Salmon River Trail and the Sto:lo

People are thought to have first arrived in the Lower Fraser Valley after the final retreat of the glaciers (about 12.000 years ago). Tradition speaks of how X á:ls (the Creator), placed Kwantlen people along the shores of the Fraser River so they could access the rich resources of the area. Legend says the first Kwantlen, “Swaniset”, was a descendent of the sky who suddenly appeared on the river. Later X á:ls gave him all the tools and knowledge to be a great hunter and fisherman.
