GPS Downloads

  • KML/KMZ files can be opened in Google Earth, and many smartphone apps.
  • GPX files can be opened by most GPS software apps when KMZ cannot. Note, GPX files do not contain custom colours and icons that we use on our maps; all tracks and icons will appear the same colour and styles. We recommend using KMZ instead of GPX if possible.

The files below include data for only this specific area. For all of our Trans Canada Trail data for the entire province (including features, campsites and alternate routes), download our BC.kmz master file (1.2 MB)

Visit our GPS & Navigation page for instructions of how to use your smartphone as a GPS device (even when outside of data coverage) or how to import data to your Garmin unit.

About the Route:

The route between Trail and Salmo is not part of the Trans Canada Trail. However, for those travelling from Castlegar south to Trail, the two routes described here will allow one to connect to the southern terminus of the Salmo Great Northern Railway for a pleasant ride north to Nelson. This can be a suitable route for bicyclists who have chosen not to take the "main route" of the Trans Canada Trail from Castlegar directly to Nelson via the Skattebo Reach and Ward's Ferry Trail, both of which are unsuitable (and not permitted) for cyclists at this time.

Our two favoured alternate routes connecting Trail and Salmo are either A) Following Highway 3B through the Beaver Valley via Montrose and Fruitvale, or B) taking a journey further south to the Pend Oreille River, then returning north again from Nelway to Salmo on Highway 6. Much of this route is on unpaved roadways.

For those travelling to Salmo via the Beaver Valley, the route leaving Trail on Highway 3B begins with a long climb up the mountainside to Montrose and Fruitvale - however, it is the only substantial hill on the route. The rest of the highway to Salmo is otherwise fairly flat and simple to follow.

The Pend Oreille is a quieter and longer route. It can be quite hot and dusty at times, but it surely a more memorable adventure.

Connection Points to the TCT:

The route from Trail to Salmo connects to the Trans Canada Trail at the intersection of Columbia Avenue and McQuarrie Street. While the TCT approaches from the north along Columbia Ave and is proposed to cross the river on a future pedestrian bridge, this alternate route continues east along the river on Columbia Ave before connecting to Highway 3B. The route splits further east; either continue uphill on Highway 3B towards Montrose and Fruitvale in the Beaver Valley for a quick, efficient connection to the TCT in Salmo (Salmo Great Northern Rail Trail), or take Highway 22A south to the Pend Oreille valley. From the split, the Beaver Valley route is 36 km, whereas the Pend Oreille route is roughly 66 km.

The alternate routes connecting Trail and Salmo converge in Salmo at the southern terminus of the Salmo Great Northern Rail Trail. From here, the rail trail travels north to Nelson and is designated as part of the Trans Canada Trail, though it could technically be considered a spur since the vast majority isn't part of the "main spine" which runs from Castlegar to Nelson. For those leaving the Great Northern and travelling west to Trail, we have provided two routes; a shorter route on Highway 3A through the Beaver Valley via Fruitvale and Montrose, or a longer, quieter journey south through the Pend Oreille.

Report a Trail Closure

Trail maintenance issues are the responsibility of the Trail Steward, which is either the trail owner or a group given authorization to perform maintenance work. Trails BC is a trail steward for a very limited number of trail segments on the Trans Canada Trail; unfortunately, if a major trail issue occurs along the Trans Canada Trail, there is often very little we can do about it - but we can try to pass on the information to the trail steward, if one exists.

Information such as a precise location (GPS waypoint), photo, as well as your contact information is extremely helpful to ensure the problem is accurately reported.

AGAIN, DO NOT USE THIS FORM TO SUBMIT NOTICES ABOUT TRAILS THAT ARE NOT PART OF THE TRANS CANADA TRAIL. We will simply delete the submission and it will not be posted or passed on to anyone. If you need to report a closure on such a trail, please determine the trail owner or operator and send a notice to them.

Would it be unwise to continue through the closure or blockage? You may add more detail in your report.
Please enter your trail closure report. Include a GPS location or a detailed description of its precise location.
JPG format only, 3 MB max. You must click "upload" after selecting file.
If the blockage/closure can be bypassed, please include your recommended route to do so!
