The river can only be forded in late summer and is still deep and cold - do so at your own risk! images/icon-2.png TCT Warning: Juliet Slide 1 Caution: Rough trail for 200 metres due to washout! The bluff above the riverbend is constantly washing out the old railway alignment. Volunteers with Trails BC and the Nicola Valley Explorers work each spring to keep a trail clear along the sandy bluff, but bicyclists must carry their bikes through and be mindful of sluffing sand. Take note - there is a short stairway/ladder. images/icon-2.png TCT Warning: Juliet Slide 2 Caution: Rough trail for 200 metres due to washout! The bluff above the riverbend is constantly washing out the old railway alignment. Volunteers with Trails BC and the Nicola Valley Explorers work each spring to keep a trail clear along the sandy bluff, but bicyclists should be mindful of sluffing sand and may need to carry their bicycle through. A bypass route is available that travels uphill - it is much more challenging, but bypasses the slide area completely. images/icon-2.png 60.3 Hope Rec Centre Washrooms are available. Features a fantastic mural over the swimming pool. images/icon-3.png 58.2 KVR Western Trail Terminus The KVR did run through the city of Hope and beyond a short distance, but this is the first piece of continuous intact rail trail that can travelled upon. images/icon-3.png 63.0 Sucker Creek images/icon-3.png Kawkawa Station images/icon-3.png 234.2 Othello (Quintette) Tunnels images/icon-3.png Othello Station The KVR's Chief Engineer, Andrew McCulloch, was known to be a big fan of Shakespeare, and in fact named several stations on the Kettle Valley Railway after characters featured in Shakespearean plays. Othello is the westernmost of these stations. images/icon-3.png Mile 79.8 The KVR originally travelled from Midway to Brookmere; the Coquihalla portion was built a little later. This point is known as Mile 79.8, marking its distance from Brookmere. images/icon-3.png Mile 74.6 From this point north for approximately 6.5 km, the KVR is no longer visible due to the Coquihalla Highway which travels along the old railbed. Then, for 2.3 km, the railway runs along the slope of the mountain - but the rail cannot be accessed. KVR users will reconnect at Mile 66. images/icon-3.png Lear Station This station is of course named after the play (and main character) of the Shakespearean play "King Lear". In the play, the title character descends into madness after disposing of his estate between two of his three daughters based on their flattery, bringing tragic consequences for all. The play is based on the legend of Leir of Britain, a mythological pre-Roman Celtic king. images/icon-3.png Mile 66.0 The KVR further south of this point is not accessible until Mile 74.6; southbound travellers will need to follow our bypass route. images/icon-3.png 398.2 Jessica Station This former station on the KVR lies at Mile 64.0 and is named after a character in Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice". Andrew McCulloch, the chief engineer of the KVR surely loved the play, as no less than 3 stations along the railway were named after its characters. Shylock and Portia station are located further north. In the play, Jessica was the daughter of Shylock. images/icon-3.png Verona Station In keeping with a Shakespearean theme, this station was named after the play "The Two Gentlemen of Verona". This comedy is believed to have been written between 1589 and 1592 and is considered by some to be Shakespeare's first play. The play deals with the themes of friendship and infidelity, the conflict between friendship and love, and the foolish behaviour of people in love. images/icon-3.png Aurum Station (Mile 61.7) One of the few stations along this section of the KVR not named for characters in Shakespearean plays, this station is named for the Latin word meaning gold. Perhaps keep an eye open for shiny, yellow nuggets along the trail. It lies at Mile 61.7; the railway further north is no longer usable as it reaches the Ladner Creek Trestle at Mile 59.3. We won't be using the KVR until it reconnects at Mile 56 near the former Shylock Station. images/icon-3.png 396.0 Ladner Creek Uphill and upstream lies the Ladner Creek Trestle; an impressive piece of engineering. Access to the trestle and former railway is very limited and challenging due to cave ins and land slides. images/icon-3.png 553.4 Shylock In reality, Skylock Station wasn't located here; it was on the opposite side of the highway, approximately at Mile 56.7 but is no longer accessible. This former station on the KVR is named after a character in Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice". In the play, Shylock is a Jewish moneylender who lends money to his Christian rival, Antonio, setting the security at a pound of Antonio's flesh. When a bankrupt Antonio defaults on the loan, Shylock demands the pound of flesh, as revenge for Antonio having previously insulted and spat on him. images/icon-3.png Mile 55.3 This is Mile 55.3 of the former railway, as measured from Brookmere. images/icon-3.png 578.1 Portia Station This former station on the KVR is named after a character in Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice". Portia, a rich, beautiful, and intelligent heiress, is bound by the lottery set forth in her father's will, which gives potential suitors the chance to choose between three caskets composed of gold, silver and lead. If they choose the right casket – the casket containing Portia's portrait – they win Portia's hand in marriage. If they choose the wrong casket, they must leave and never seek another woman in marriage. images/icon-3.png Mile 54.5: Portia Wye A wye was located here in order to turn locomotives around. The wye ran north another 350 metres (roughly following the roadway towards the highway) then crossed the river and reconnected to the railway about 100 metres to the west from this point. For northbound travellers heading to Brookmere, the route takes a sharp turn south for a short distance to get aorund the peak immediately east, then turns north, travelling up a separate canyon from the highway. images/icon-3.png Mile 49.9 images/icon-3.png Iago Station (Mile 47.6) The namesake of this station is the villainous Iago, the main antagonist of Shakespeare's play, Othello. Iago was the flag bearer of General Othello, and devised a plan to destroy Othello by making him believe that his wife was having an affair with his lieutenant, Michael Cassio. Cassio does not have a station on the KVR named after him. images/icon-3.png Iago Snow Shed

A former snow shed is located at the side of the trail. images/icon-3.png Iago Tunnel

An excellent tunnel lies just south of Hole in the Wall.

images/icon-3.png 812.3 Hole in the Wall (Mile 43.8) For northbound travellers, the railway further north of this point is usable by hikers, but is simply not suitable for cyclists.Hikers can follow the railway to Mile 41.5 at Needle Creek but will need to descend the steep hillside to the main road at that point; Cyclists are best not to attempt this; continue on Old Coquihalla Road instead from this point on. images/icon-3.png 811.4 Needle Creek (Mile 41.5) Former rail bridge abuttments and pillars. Wilderness camping is possible - no facilities, leave no trace. images/icon-3.png Romeo Station Of course, the trail route currently utilizes the forest service road rather than the true railway at this point; however the former Romeo Station lies on the rail trail on the opposite side of the river. Of course, the station is named after the lead male character in Shakespeare's play, Romeo and Juliet. Being marooned on the hillside across the river, Romeo Station seldomly sees visitors these days, and certainly no trains. Where art thou, Juliet? About 20 kilometres north! images/icon-3.png Coquihalla Summit - 1240 metres (Coquihalla Highway) images/icon-3.png 965.5 Bridal Veil Falls (Mile 34.1) Bridal Veils Falls (and its trestle) lies directly north and is visible from the Trans Canada Trail which follows the forest service road rather than the railway. images/icon-3.png Dry Gulch (Mile 33.3) Dry Gulch lies directly north on the former railway. images/icon-3.png South Portal Tunnel #3 A former tunnel is located on the railway just uphill from this point. images/icon-3.png Mile 31.7 From this point south, travellers will not be using the railway bed for a while; much of the right-of-way has been destroyed by landslides and cave-ins. The route utilizes the forest service road which travels parallel - slightly downhill - to the former rails images/icon-3.png Coquihalla Station (Mile 29) The station lies at the former high point of the railway's travels though the Coquihalla. images/icon-3.png Coquihalla Wye A wye connected to the railway 100 metres to the north and south from this point, extending about 180 metres directly east. images/icon-3.png 1074.9 Mine Creek (Mile 22.8) images/icon-3.png Mile 22.2 For northbound travellers, the highway has taken over much of the railbed, so the trail travels parallel to it to Mile 18.2 (a distance of 4 miles or 6.4 km) images/icon-3.png Mile 18.2 For southbound travellers, the highway has taken over much of the railbed, so the trail travels parallel to it to Mile 22.2 (a distance of 4 miles or 6.4 km) images/icon-3.png Mile 16.4 A slight detour using roads lies ahead for northbound travellers in order to connect with the railway on the opposite side of the highway. images/icon-3.png Mile 16.2 A slight detour using roads lies ahead for southbound travellers in order to connect with the railway on the opposite side of the highway. images/icon-3.png 1021.1 Juliet Station Nothing remains of Juliet Station, as the highway and roads have replaced any trace of the Kettle Valley Railway here - however, one can imagine that after a long climb over the Coquihalla summit, the long, straight, gentle decline into Juliet was a comfortable moment in the journey for the train and passengers. Juliet Station was of course named for the lead female character in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. images/icon-3.png 930.4 Brodie Station/Siding (Mile 6.4) Brodie was a junction point for the railway - continuing further north, the Merrit Sub continued north. The trestle here turns gently to the Northeast en route to Brookmere. A missing trestle 100 metres to the south was the main route between Hope and Brookmere. images/icon-3.png Kingsvale images/icon-3.png 1764.5 Brookmere Station Brookmere was formerly known as Otter Summit and marks Mile 0.0 on the Coquihalla Sub - but roughly Mile 175 (distance from Penticton) on the Princeton sub. It was the divisional point of the KVR and VV&E tracks, as both railways travelled through the Okanagan, competing fiercely, though only one railway was necssary. To the south, both railways were forced to collaborate for a route through the Coquihalla. Due to two railways, Brookmere featured a shared station house and watering facilities - located between the two rails. You might notice the water tank with dual spouts to service each track. A bunkhouse, coal tower, turntable and three-stall roundhouse were located north of the tracks for use by the KVR. images/icon-3.png Parking: Hope Rec Centre images/icon-4.png Parking: Union Creek (Hope) images/icon-4.png Parking: Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park images/icon-4.png Parking: Britton Creek Rest Area images/icon-4.png Parking: Brodie Siding images/icon-4.png Toilet: Hope Visitor Centre description:
REST_AREA_:
REST_AREA1:
REST_ARE_1:
ASSOC_NUMB:
DIST_FROM_:
NUMBER_OF_:
TOILET_TYP:
WHEELCHAIR:
NUMBER_OF1:
DIRECTION_:
ACCESS_RES:
DECELERATI:
ACCELERATI:
ACCOM_COMM:
OPEN_YEAR_:
OPEN_DATE:
CLOSE_DATE: images/icon-5.png Toilet: Othello description:
REST_AREA_:
REST_AREA1:
REST_ARE_1:
ASSOC_NUMB:
DIST_FROM_:
NUMBER_OF_:
TOILET_TYP:
WHEELCHAIR:
NUMBER_OF1:
DIRECTION_:
ACCESS_RES:
DECELERATI:
ACCELERATI:
ACCOM_COMM:
OPEN_YEAR_:
OPEN_DATE:
CLOSE_DATE: images/icon-5.png 0.0 Toilet: Box Canyon description: Ministry of Transportation Highway Rest Stop "Box Canyon" #3133097. Coquihalla Lakes Bypass This bypass route is helpful between Portia and Coquihalla Lakes when pipeline maintenance is ongoing (the TCT route follows a service road for the TransMountain pipeline) or when late snow does not allow bicyclists to pass through in the Spring months (can be into late May). Alternate: Othello Tunnel Detour (Winter Route) Because the Othello Tunnels are closed each winter (approx November to April), this route is a bicycle-friendly bypass route to be used during the times of the year when the main Trans Canada Trail route is closed. Contact BC Parks or the Hope Tourism office to for the tunnels' status. Alternate: Juliet Slide 2 Bypass This bypass route goes around the north washout at Juliet. The bluff above the riverbend is constantly washing out the old railway alignment. Although most users can pass through at most times of the year, this bypass trail can be used when new washouts occur. This bypass route goes uphill and is much more challenging, but bypasses the slide area completely. 995.1 998.47 998.47 1000.87 1002.31 1005.2 1007.6 1006.64 1010.96 1010.0 1013.37 1015.29 1016.73 1020.1 1020.58 1019.13 1018.65 1017.21 1016.25 1016.25 1016.73 1018.65 1018.17 1016.25 1012.89 1011.44 1010.48 1008.08 1006.64 1004.72 1001.83 999.91 997.99 996.54 996.54 995.1 995.1 995.1 991.74 990.78 Alternate: Brodie Washout Bypass A small washout has partialy blocked the trail at Brodie Siding.
