Haslam Suspension Bridge is a must-see feature but the entrance is quite narrow for bicyclists. TCT Bypass: Haslam Bypass (Bicycle Route) The Cassidy Gas Pipeline Route (as of yet unnamed, wll run roughly along the Terasen Gas Pipeline) is a route under development by the Regional District of Nanaimo. At the boundary with the Cowichan Valley Trail, there will be a parking lot and trail head. The surrounding land is owned by forestry companies and we ask trail users to stay on the trail. The northern half of this trail features pristine forest and vibrant mosses. TCT Multi-Use: Spruston to Extension (21 km) This portion of the Trans Canada Trail connects the Whitepine Trail (on the south side of the Nanaimo River) to the Pipeline Trail (on the north side) using roadways, including a short section of the Trans Canada Highway. The portion on the highway is intended for northbound travellers - we have provided an alternative route for southbound travellers on our maps. Trail users, particularly bicyclists, joining the Pipeline Trail on the north side (really a pipeline service road) should be prepared for some challenging sections which may require a dismount and short push up a steep hill at the north end. ATVs are often spotted here and we encourage hikers and bicyclists to be alert, particularly in low light situations, to prevent a collision. A short section in the middle runs through private property - users can pass through, but a hiking-oriented bypass trail is the official route. The trail bypasses a section of the Pipeline Trail which runs through private property; though that section of the Pipeline trail/road is not blocked, it has not been designated as Trans Canada Trail. The Regional District of Nanaimo is responsible for operating and maintaining this trail. TCT Bypass: Pipeline Trail (Bicycle Route) This route stays on the pipeline. However, the official Trans Canada Trail dives into the forest below, following a rugged hiking trail. The official Trans Canada Trail route is not maintained, so users may find it easier to simply remain on the pipeline. Please note, the road through this section is on private property - please stay on the road and be respectful of the property owner. TCT Multi-Use: Pipeline Trail North (2.1 km) This section of trail follows a pipeline service road. Bicyclists should be prepared for some challenging sections which may require a dismount and short push up a steep hill at the north end. TCT Hiking: Nanaimo Extension Ridge / Abyss (5.4 km) The Extension Ridge Trail (also known as the Abyss Trail) is a wilderness hiking trail featuring mature forest and lush, moss-covered rock. However, its most famous feature is a deep cleft in the rock known as "the abyss". Take note of its location; it can be easily passed by without notice. Bicyclists can use the trail but it is a challenging ride. It is an enjoyable intermediate mountain bike trail but should NOT be attempted with panniers, trailers or a less-sturdy bicycle - use a bypass route instead. This is primarily a hiking trail; please respect walkers and be kind to the trail surface. TCT Hiking: Harewood Mines (1.2 km) This section of trail provides access to the Colliery Dam Park along Harewood Mines Road. A set of stairs makes this section inaccessible to cyclists. The trail is maintained by the city of Nanaimo. TCT Bypass: Extension Bypass (Bicyle Route) This paved road bypass allows bicyclists to connect with the Parkway Trail, a great urban trail in a forested setting. The highway looms above, but is barely noticeable most of the time. TCT Multi-Use: City of Nanaimo (10.6 km) This urban trail winds its way downhill through parks and forests until it reaches the waterfront. Cyclists are recommended to take the route around this obstacle. TCT Hiking: Buttertubs Marsh (No Biking, 0.1 km) TCT Biking: Departure Bay Ferry Southbound Route (0.6 km) TCT Multi-Use: BC Ferries (Departure Bay-Horseshoe Bay 57 km) The ferry service to/from Vancouver Island via Departure Bay (aka downtown Nanaimo) is run by BC Ferries (http://www.bcferries.com/schedules/), going to Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver. Ferries generally run every 2 hours. Crossing time is 100 minutes. Alternate: Newcastle Island Journey Newcastle Island's trails are fine walking and slow-speed bicycling trails with a hard packed dirt surface and occaisonal wooden bridges. Some trails do not permit bicycle travel on the island, but these trails are well marked and maps are posted along the trail. Intepretive signs highlight the island's interesting history. Newcastle Island features a great campground and facilities. Newcastle Island is located in Nanaimo Harbour, just minutes away from downtown Nanaimo.
