Take a moment to dip your feet into the ocean! The water is accessible 80 metres to the Northwest using a concrete ramp that leads down to the water, or using the boat ramp located 90 metres to the Northeast by the boat shed. images/icon-2.png Clover Point When Hudson’s Bay Company Chief Factor James Douglas landed on the point in 1842, he named it for the acres of tall red clover growing "most luxuriantly." Douglas wrote to his friend James Hargrave: "I was...delighted in ranging over fields knee deep in clover, tall grasses and ferns reaching above our heads, at these unequivocal proofs of fertility." The fields were most likely Springbank Clover (Trifolium wormskjoldii), and the Coast Salish people cared for the clover, as well as Camas, a wildflower with a starchy edible bulb. images/icon-2.png Finlayson Point Before the settlers arrived, the Coast Salish people maintained a small, pallisaded village that was occupied intermittently from the year 1000 until approximately 300 years ago. The settlement was here for defense during times of war, and it was also important for reef net fishing. During World War II, two naval rifled muzzle-loading guns were located here. images/icon-2.png 2.8 Beacon Hill Park The crowning jewel of Victoria's city parks images/icon-2.png míqәn Contemporarily known as Beacon Hill, the southward sloping hill was was once known as "míqәn" (pronounced MEE-qan) in the Lekwungen tongue of the Coast Salish people. It means "warmed by the sun". The slope was used as a burial site (marked by large rock cairns just southeast of the hilltop) and was a popular place to rest and play. A game similar to field hockey, called Coqwialls, was played here. images/icon-2.png Ogden Point Breakwater and Unity Wall Mural images/icon-2.png Provincial Legislature BC's house of government, featuring lovely public lawns and gardens. images/icon-2.png Victoria Inner Harbour images/icon-2.png Former site of Fort Victoria After coming ashore in 1842, Sir James Douglas selected and mapped this area, with plans to settle - but not immediately. Douglas sailed away to return the following year fully prepared to build the fort just uphill of this spot and begin farming operations. He would bring livestock, seeds, tools, goods, weapons and men to establish "the first European settlement larger than a fort in British Columbia", which would of course make the Lekwungen Nation to be the first aborginal people to be deprived of their land base. Though idyllic, the site proved to be challenging - dry summers meant a lack of drinking water and unimpressive farming. images/icon-2.png Johnson Street Bridge The new Johnson Street Bridge was opened on March 31, 2018, replacing the previous bridge which stood from 1924 to 2018. images/icon-2.png Selkirk Trestle One of the highlights while riding the Galloping Goose trail! images/icon-2.png Humpback Reservoir images/icon-2.png 81.1 Waugh Creek Falls Viewpoint images/icon-2.png 95.8 Suspension Bridge images/icon-2.png Highest Point of the TCT on Vancouver Island (487 m) images/icon-2.png 448.6 CRD/CVRD Boundary Boundary point between the Capital Regional District and the Cowichan Valley Regional District. images/icon-2.png Parking: Clover Point Daytime parking only! images/icon-3.png Parking: Atkins Station images/icon-3.png Parking: Aldeane images/icon-3.png Parking: Humpback Reservoir images/icon-3.png Toilet: Clover Point images/icon-4.png Toilet: Dallas Road images/icon-4.png Toilet: Fishermans Wharf images/icon-4.png Toilet: Victoria Harbour images/icon-4.png Toilet: Regatta Landing This toilet is maintained by the city of Victoria and is subject to closures after hours. images/icon-4.png Toilet: Atkins Station images/icon-4.png Toilet: Humpback Reservoir images/icon-4.png 281.6 Toilet: Wolf Hill images/icon-4.png Camp: Goldstream Provincial Park Info as of July 2019: There are 159 campsites at this park with pit and flush toilets, as well as hot showers. Users, please note that some sections of the trail are still being planned and developed, so the current route shown on our maps use some roadway bypasses. In most cases, bicycle lanes and sidewalks are provided. Future development in the Songhees Reserve area is planned. Alternate: E&N Trail (Langford) Major changes are in store for this section of the E&N (Esquimalt & Nanaimo) Rail with Trail, as new portions of trail will be developed between Savory School and Atkins Avenue (to connect to the Galloping Goose Regional Trail), as well as at the western end between Jacklin Road and Humpback Road. The route shown here can be walked and cycled, but only about half actually uses official trail.
