In its work to support equitable trail and greenway access for all outdoor recreation users,
Trails BC has adopted a position statement on the use of Motorized Off-Road Vehicles (MORVs).
Trails BC believes that active travel on trails is fundamentally important to BC residents and visitors alike. Active travel benefits personal health, environmental sustainability, and the provincial economy, by saving healthcare costs and delivering tourism revenue.
However, the outdoor recreation benefits of active travel on trails become less enjoyable, highly disrupted, and even impossible to participate for most users due to the presence and past signs of MORV use. MORV impacts on nature, the noise, the pollution, and their passing speeds cause many non-motorised active travellers to abandon or abort their outdoor experience to go elsewhere, including out of province to enjoy naturalness and solitude.
Both active travel on trails and MORV use can function and flourish in British Columbia, but collaboration requires regional conversations between active travel organizations and the MORV community to determine the best approach. As demonstrated by best practices around the world, the answer will be separated trails for incompatible users.
The MORV position statement has twelve collaborative points and can be downloaded from the https://trailsbc.ca/ website along with a copy of the known facts associated with MORV use.
